There is a moment that happens to almost every guest at KabiniKaanana. You step outside in the morning, the mist is still hanging over the water, and the backwaters are completely still. No noise, no rush - just water, forest, and light. That moment is what Kabini is really about.

What are the Kabini Backwaters?
The Kabini backwaters are formed by the Kabini Dam, built in 1974 across the Kabini River near Beechanahalli, HD Kote. When the dam was built, the river spread out into a wide reservoir that now borders Nagarhole Tiger Reserve on one side and quiet villages on the other. The result is one of the most wildlife-rich water bodies in South India.
KabiniKaanana sits right on these backwaters. Our waterfront faces east, which means guests get clear morning light across the water - perfect for photography, birdwatching, or just a quiet cup of tea.
Wildlife at the Backwaters
The backwaters are not just scenic - they are alive. Elephants come to the water's edge to drink and bathe, especially in the dry months between November and May. Marsh crocodiles are residents of the river. Smooth-coated otters appear in small groups along the banks. And the birdlife is extraordinary - over 250 species have been documented here, from water birds like herons, egrets, and cormorants to the striking Indian Roller and the seasonal Bar-headed Goose.

Kabini Dam
The dam itself is a short drive from the homestay and worth a visit, especially in the early morning or at sunset. The reservoir stretches wide and calm, with the forest on the far bank. There are no crowds, no vendors, no noise - just open water and sky. It is one of those places that feels genuinely remote even though it is easy to reach.
Boat Safari on the Backwaters
The best way to experience the backwaters is from the water itself. A boat safari takes you along the Kabini River with views of the forest, the dam, and the wildlife that comes to the banks. Elephants bathing, crocodiles basking, and kingfishers diving - all from a quiet boat with no engine noise disturbing the scene.
Check out all our backwater activities available at the homestay.
Best Time to Visit
November to February is the finest season. Water levels are stable, wildlife congregates near the backwaters as other water sources dry up, and the mornings are cool and clear. Elephant sightings near the water are most common during this window.
