The drive from Bangalore to Kabini is one of those weekend journeys that starts feeling good long before you arrive. The city thins out, the highway settles, and by the time you move past Mysore and toward Hunsur, the trip already feels like an escape.

Scenic route used for the Bangalore to Kabini road trip

At roughly 230 km door to door, it usually takes about 4 to 4.5 hours by car. That makes Kabini close enough for a short break, but far enough to feel like you have properly left Bangalore behind.

Best route from Bangalore to Kabini

The recommended route is: Bangalore → Mysore via NH 275 → HD Kote Road via Hunsur → Kabini. This avoids city congestion once you exit Bangalore and puts you on well-maintained national and state highways for most of the journey.

Avoid the Ooty Road fork if your destination is Kabini. The Hunsur and HD Kote side feels simpler, more relaxed, and much more in tune with the kind of trip you are taking.

Distance and driving time

Total distance is approximately 225 to 235 km depending on where you start in Bangalore. If you leave before 6 AM, you can usually reach Kabini before late morning, which gives you the rest of the day to settle in and enjoy the place without feeling rushed.

Best stops on the way

Channapatna (60 km from Bangalore): Famous for its lacquerware toys and local snacks. A short stop here is always worth it.

Mysore (145 km): Fuel, breakfast, and a coffee break if needed. You can bypass the city centre via the ring road to save time.

Hunsur (175 km): Smaller town with good local eateries and the last reliable fuel stop before HD Kote.

Driving tips

Leave Bangalore early to clear the Mysore highway before peak traffic builds. Download offline maps before you start — connectivity becomes patchy after Hunsur. The final 30 km through HD Kote is scenic and slower, so enjoy the pace rather than rushing it. If you are driving in the morning, keep an eye out near the forest edge — wildlife sometimes crosses the road between K Gudi and Kabini.

The best part of this road trip is that it does not end with the drive. By the time the backwaters appear through the trees, the shift in pace has already happened. Kabini does that well. It makes the journey feel like part of the stay.
